Down in the willow garden where me and my love did meet It was there we sat a’courtin’, my love, she fell off to sleep. I had a bottle of barley wine, which my love did not know. It was there I murdered that dear little girl down by the banks below. I drew my saber through her, it was a bloody knife. I threw her in the river, it was an awful sight. My father often told me that money would set me free, So I did murder that dear little girl whose name was Rose Connelly. Now my father sits at his cabin door wiping his tear-worn eyes. For his only son soon shall walk upon that scaffold high. My race is run beneath the sun, the Devil is waiting for me, For I did murder that dear little girl whose name was Rose Connelly.

Amid the tall weeds and the stones of a poor father’s garden, Clinging on in the world of the sword and the lance, A girl on her knees as the world’s edge fades into the brightness; God’s messengers call here, they call on a daughter of France. (Chorus) And I must be at the king’s side, there will be no help if not from me. Across the fields of Burgundy the voices call my name – Of saints and of soldiers, they call out my name, “Jeanne, Jeanne, Jeanne….” Obscured by trouser and cap like a sanctified shadow Through the dark countryside to the court of the king. Prophecy, madness, enlightenment – no one could know, But the sovereign sent word we would march to the siege’s ending. One year of the wind at our backs, one year of spirits rising, Marching high on the road ‘neath a patron’s banner. Bright goddess armored in steel, bringing victory cheering, But fortune swings quickly, and fate soon brought down its hammer. Taken a captive, abandoned by countrymen and king, Broken body cradles a heart that ne’er falters. Catherine, Michael, and Margaret bear witness this warrior’s soul Lifts on smoke from the flames like incense at the altar.

As I come in by Fiddichside On a May mornin’ I spied Willie MacIntosh An hour before the dawnin’ Turn again, turn again, Turn again I bid ye If ye burn Auchindoun Huntly he will heid ye “Heid me or hang me, That will never fear me, I will burn Auchindoun E’er the life leave me” As I come in by Fiddichside On a May mornin Auchindoun was in a blaze An hour before the dawnin Crawin’, Crawin’ For all your crows a’crawin’ Ye burnt your crops and tint your wings An hour before the dawnin’

Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye. Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar, Thunderclaps rend the air; Baffled, our foes stand by the shore, Follow they will not dare. Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep, Ocean's a royal bed. Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep Watch by your weary head. Burned are their homes, exile and death Scatter the loyal men; Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath Charlie will come again.

As time draws near my dearest dear when you and I must part, How little you know of the grief and woe in my poor achin’ heart. Each night I suffer for your sake, you’re the girl I love so dear. How I wish that I was goin’ with you, or you were stayin’ here. I wish my chest was made of glass, wherein you might behold Upon my heart your name lies wrote in letters made of gold. In letter made of gold, my love, believe me when I say You are the darlin’ of my heart until my dyin’ day. The blackest crow that ever flew was surely turned to white If ever I prove false to you bright day would turn to night. Bright day will turn to night my love, the elements will mourn If ever I prove false to you the seas would rage and burn. With time it’s clear my dearest dear with you and I apart How little you know of the grief and woe still in my poor achin’ heart Each night I struggle for your sake, you’re the girl I love so dear. How I wish that I was gone’ with you, or you were drawin’ near.
