about

Genevieve and I learned this harmony to ‘Auchindoun’ from our family friend, song collector Bekki Shining Bearheart. We follow it with the first tune we ever learned when we were children This text (and the march by title) both reference stories of clan division during Scotland’s ancient struggle against English rule. Genevieve learned the waltzes from Chris Wood and Andy Cutting’s album, “Lisa”.

lyrics

As I come in by Fiddichside
On a May mornin’
I spied Willie MacIntosh
An hour before the dawnin’
Turn again, turn again,
Turn again I bid ye
If ye burn Auchindoun
Huntly he will heid ye

“Heid me or hang me,
That will never fear me,
I will burn Auchindoun
E’er the life leave me”

As I come in by Fiddichside
On a May mornin
Auchindoun was in a blaze
An hour before the dawnin
Crawin’, Crawin’
For all your crows a’crawin’
Ye burnt your crops and tint your wings
An hour before the dawnin’
