about

The text was found in written sources throughout the Appalachians and Ozarks and set to various tunes over time, although this is thought to be the oldest version. Our final verse, which Paul changed from the traditional by revisiting and tweaking the words of the first, reflects the passing of time.

lyrics

As time draws near my dearest dear when you and I must part,
How little you know of the grief and woe in my poor achin’ heart.
Each night I suffer for your sake, you’re the girl I love so dear.
How I wish that I was goin’ with you, or you were stayin’ here.

I wish my chest was made of glass, wherein you might behold
Upon my heart your name lies wrote in letters made of gold.
In letter made of gold, my love, believe me when I say
You are the darlin’ of my heart until my dyin’ day.

The blackest crow that ever flew was surely turned to white
If ever I prove false to you bright day would turn to night.
Bright day will turn to night my love, the elements will mourn
If ever I prove false to you the seas would rage and burn.

With time it’s clear my dearest dear with you and I apart
How little you know of the grief and woe still in my poor achin’ heart
Each night I struggle for your sake, you’re the girl I love so dear.
How I wish that I was gone’ with you, or you were drawin’ near.
