about

Appalachian murder ballad with likely origins in Galway, Ireland. Collected by Cecil Sharp in 1918. We learned of this song from our dear friend and fellow musician Ben Stewart, in Athens, OH.

lyrics

Down in the willow garden where me and my love did meet
It was there we sat a’courtin’, my love, she fell off to sleep.
I had a bottle of barley wine, which my love did not know.
It was there I murdered that dear little girl down by the banks below.

I drew my saber through her, it was a bloody knife.
I threw her in the river, it was an awful sight.
My father often told me that money would set me free,
So I did murder that dear little girl whose name was Rose Connelly.

Now my father sits at his cabin door wiping his tear-worn eyes.
For his only son soon shall walk upon that scaffold high.
My race is run beneath the sun, the Devil is waiting for me,
For I did murder that dear little girl whose name was Rose Connelly.
